Why in the world would you call something that lasts all day "morning sickness"? There were days that I literally couldn't move. One slight shift was all it would take to reverse the contents of my stomach. Starting the second I opened my eyes in the morning and not ending until I finally passed out at night. And by night, I mean around dinner time. Who has time for a life when you spend your days puking and your nights, starting as early as 4pm, passed out. These days, women who tell me how much they love pregnancy are immediately deleted from my contacts.
I actually survived an entire week by only eating popsicles. Amazingly, I only lost a couple pounds. That week, even speaking would lead to toilet-hugging. The popsicles that saved my life were Dreyer's Fruit Bars. Those little miracles were all I could choke down and all that would stay down for days on end. The coconut ones were my favorites, but they come in a few flavors, so I'm sure even the most peaked pregs could find one that could sustain them through the worst of days.
I also tried some teas, Preggy Pops, ginger gum, Sea Bands, prescription drugs and even aromatherapy chap stick. For me personally, I saw the following results:
1. Earth Mama Angel Baby, Morning Wellness Tea: Helped somewhat. If anything, it was good to be able to get anything down, and this seemed to go down better than plain water and it usually stayed down.
2. Preggy Pops: In my opinion, these were just seriously overpriced suckers. They did nothing for me and didn't even taste great. At nearly $1/lollipop, I felt robbed. I should have just tried hard candy or regular lollipops.
3. Sea-Band Anti-Nausea Ginger Gum: This actually worked pretty well, and I especially liked it when I was traveling, which I did constantly for work. Surprisingly, it's kind of spicy. My only complaint is that it gets hard and tastes bad pretty quickly, so have plenty of backup. To keep it tasting fresh, you'll go through several pieces/hour.
4. Sea Bands: These little wrist-bands may have worked a little. However, unless you're wearing very long sleeves, they let everyone around you know exactly how you're feeling at that moment. Since morning (all-day) sickness usually hits us the hardest at the beginning of pregnancy, wearing these beautiful little accessories may blow your cover if you're trying to keep the news to yourself.
5. Prescription drugs: I was prescribed Promethazine. Although this stuff worked beautifully, it knocked me out. When I say that it knocked me out, I mean it quite literally. I once took it on an overseas flight and woke up about 6 hours later with a fork full of food in my hand. It seems I had passed out before the food made it to my mouth. If you don't have much to do and have all day to sleep, this is the drug for you. However, if you have a job or anything going on that requires you to be conscious, I suggest trying all other options first.
6. Sweetsation Aromatherapy Organic Lip Balm: I'm embarrassed to admit that I tried this. It's expensive, and well, it's lip balm. But desperate times call for desperate measures and I was willing to try anything. Probably needless to say, but this didn't work. It's overpriced (nearly $10 with shipping), burned my lips, required reapplication quickly and smelled like lemon household cleaner. The only benefit was that the smell overpowered any bad smell that could send you running to the toilet. That is if the smell of the balm itself didn't send you running there. All of that being said, there was one time that I was glad to have it. I was on a long-haul flight and was seated next to a man who had been out partying all night before boarding. He smelled like stale beer, smoke and body odor. Not necessarily to save me from morning sickness because this was later in pregnancy, but I was rubbing that stuff on my lips every 10 minutes or so for hours.

Ich bin schwanger
I found out I was pregnant at 5am, alone in a hotel room in Munich, Germany. I was about to fly back to the states after a week-long business trip, but had felt like crap and just knew something was wrong. Looking back, it's ironic that my journey with Torsten started like this - solo, on a business trip, overseas and with a pregnancy test that responded with "schwanger" or "nicht schwanger". Over the past six months, I've gone from traveling internationally every few weeks, working up to 16 hour days and feeling that not checking work emails for more than 4 hours EVER was unacceptable, to being a full-time mother and housewife, cooking, cleaning, changing diapers (cloth), exclusively breastfeeding and forgetting to check any emails for days at a time. This life change has been shocking, wonderful, challenging, sleepless, boring at times, exciting at others and thankless yet rewarding. I wouldn't trade this time for anything in the world.
Through this journey, we've learned what works for us, what doesn't, what products we love, which ones we hate and who we can count on and who has run for the hills since we've become parents. Since we plan to do this again at some point and my memory started failing me as soon as the test said "schwanger", I've decided to start keeping a record of everything baby.
